Stegomosuchus was named by Huene (1922). Its type is Stegomus longipes. It is the type genus of Stegomosuchidae.
It was assigned to Ornithosuchidae by Huene (1942); to Stegomosuchidae by Huene (1922) and Walker (1970); and to Protosuchidae by Carroll (1988).
